Wheel Offset Explained: How to Pick Offset and Width

A plain English guide to offset, width and getting flush fitment without rubbing.

What offset means

Offset is the distance from the wheel's mounting face (where it bolts to the hub) to the centerline of the wheel, measured in millimeters. A positive offset means the mounting face sits toward the outside of the wheel, which pulls the wheel into the car. A lower or negative offset pushes the wheel out toward the fender.

Most modern cars use a positive offset. Lowering the offset by a few millimeters is how people get the wheel to sit flush with the fender.

Offset and width work together

Changing width changes where the wheel sits, even at the same offset. Going one inch wider at the same offset adds about half an inch on the inside and half an inch on the outside. That is why width and offset always have to be chosen together, along with the tire.

Backspacing is another way to describe the same thing: the distance from the mounting face to the inner edge of the wheel. It matters most for clearing suspension parts and brakes.

What can go wrong

Too far out: the tire rubs the fender over bumps or at full lock.

Too far in: the wheel hits the suspension or the caliper, or it looks tucked and narrow.

Spacers as a fix: they work, but a wheel built with the right offset in the first place is cleaner and keeps the factory geometry.

How we pick it at Corsa

Every Corsa set is built to order, so we choose the width and offset for your exact car, brakes and tire, then confirm it in writing before production. You see the result first in a free render. Check our fitment guide or wheels by car for common setups.

Questions

What does a lower offset do?

It moves the wheel outward, closer to the fender. Too low and the tire can rub.

Can I change offset with spacers?

Yes, spacers move the wheel out, but a wheel built with the correct offset is the cleaner solution.

How do I know the right offset for my car?

It depends on your car, brakes, tire and the look you want. Corsa works it out for your exact car and confirms it before anything is made.
