Monoblock vs 2-Piece vs 3-Piece Forged Wheels

Corsa monoblock forged wheel

How the three forged wheel constructions differ, and how to pick the right one for your car.

Monoblock: one piece

A monoblock wheel is machined from a single forging. There are no seams and no bolts holding it together. That makes it the lightest and stiffest way to build a forged wheel, and it is the go-to choice for track cars and anyone chasing response.

The trade off is that the lip and barrel are fixed by the forging, so very deep stepped lips are harder to do. See our monoblock forged wheels.

2-piece: center plus barrel

A 2-piece (duoblock) wheel bolts a forged center to a separate barrel. Because the barrel is its own part, the lip depth can change without redrawing the face, which is how you get deep lips and big stagger.

The face and barrel can also be finished separately, so two-tone looks are easy. It weighs a little more than a monoblock because of the hardware. See our 2-piece forged wheels.

3-piece: center plus two barrel halves

A 3-piece wheel splits the barrel into an inner and outer half, bolted around the center. It is the classic show wheel construction and allows the most adjustment in width and offset.

It is also the heaviest and has the most hardware and seals to look after. Today, a well designed 2-piece gives you almost all of the look with less weight and upkeep, which is why we build monoblock and 2-piece wheels.

Which one should you pick?

Pick monoblock if performance comes first, if you track the car, or if you like a clean look with no exposed hardware.

Pick 2-piece if you want a deep lip, aggressive stagger, two-tone finishes or exposed lip hardware.

Questions

Which is lighter, monoblock or 2-piece?

Monoblock. It is one piece with no hardware, so it is the lightest construction.

Is a 2-piece wheel weaker than a monoblock?

Both are strong when they are properly forged and engineered. A monoblock is stiffer, while a 2-piece trades a little weight for more styling options.

Does Corsa make 3-piece wheels?

We build monoblock and 2-piece forged wheels. A 2-piece gives almost all of the 3-piece look with less weight and maintenance.
